"A 1932 Art Deco building with a rich and varied history. Designed by City Architect J.J. Woolnough, who during his career with the City of Toronto was behind an important collection of civic buildings, including the Horse Palace at the CNE. The building features elegant details and stonework, original metal windows and gabled skylights. Inside what is now called the Great Hall, fascinating industrial details remain, such as the steel structure, latticework, and overhead cranes. The site was formerly home to the St. Andrew’s Market, established in 1837 alongside the St. Andrew’s Playground to the south, serving as a western counterpart to the St. Lawrence Market and a vital public space for the city. In a nod to its storied history, Waterworks will soon be repurposed as an exciting community hub, with a European-style food hall, YMCA, retail, and residences." (Doors Open website)
