Wanting to escape was the easy part. Taking place in 1986 and 1998 and based on a true story, three poor, Black kids in rural Mississippi reap the consequences of their family’s cycle of abuse, addiction, and violence. They independently struggle to escape their circumstances and must decide whether to confront what’s plagued their family for generations or succumb to the same crippling fate, forever damned in Mississippi. Bitterly honest and profoundly subtle, writer/director Tina Mabry successfully captures growing up in a world where possibilities and opportunities seem to die in the face of the suffocating reality of physical and sexual abuse, obsession, and a myriad of destructive compulsions.

I just watched this movie, what a good movie that exposes so many truths to what goes on behind closed doors in so many families. Good job producing and making this production.

Very sad, yet realistic film! I speak from experience. I wish this was just a movie, but sadly these situations are real and happen everyday, all day. I pray for those still stuck in this situation. Especially the young children.

I just watched this movie on Netflix, gave it 5 stars, and will never watch it again. It's probably the most realistic movie dealing with family dysfunction that I've ever seen. If it hasn't already, it needs to win awards.

Very powerful movie, I had my entire family watch this. I was speechless afterwards it made me appreciate my entire life a lot more. The women who played Anna (Simbi Khali) also played Laquita on Martin. Great actress in my opinion.
